BRIDGES

Troitsky Bridge

In 1803, the pontoon bridge near the Summer Garden was constructed. After the Suvorovskaya Square was built the pontoon bridge connected it with Troitskaya (Trinity) Square on the other side of the river. So the bridge was called Suvorovsky.
In 1892, after 16 different Russian and foreign projects of permanent bridge were viewed the plan of French firm "Batinol building society" was accepted and won an international competition. According to their plan a five-sectioned bridge was symmetrically designed according to the width of the river. A two-handled rising span on the left bank and a land dike on the right bank were also important features of the design. In the middle of the composition triple-jointed metal arched girders, or cantilevers, were placed between the forth and fifth piers of the bridge. The far span was covered with metal girders with an arched outline. Trinity Bridge was the third permanent non-floating bridge built across the Neva River after the Lieutenant Schmidt and Palace Bridges and serves as an important transportation artery in the center of the city between Admiralty Island and the Petrograd Side.
It took approximately six years to build this bridge. It was completed in the run-up to the city's 200 anniversary in 1904.
The Trinity Bridge is 582 meters long and 23 meters wide between the railings. There is something in its shape that makes it related to Paris and gives Saint Petersburg a slightly Parisian look. Another interesting feature of the drawbridge is the system of arcades, which ingeniously blend in with the granite parapets of the Petrovsky embankment and appear to make one singe harmonious architectural ensemble.
The bridge is nicely decorated with the candelabras and obelisks with beautiful ornate lamps in the finest modernist style. The bridges railing are also of great artistic value. Both elements and especially the candelabras have become landmarks in the city.
The two impressive obelisks, which flank the sidewalks leading to the Trinity Bridge from the Mars field, give this major entryway a parade-like or festive appearance. Each obelisk is made of granite embellished with copper decorations s. The obelisks were headed with lamps decorated with the figures of the two-headed eagles. These lamps were taken from the bridge's predecessor Suvorovsky pontoon bridge. After the Bolshevik Revolution Soviet five-pointed stars replaced the symbols of Russian Imperial power.
