1703, May 16 (May 27, new style) - Birthday of Saint Petersburg. It was the day when the fortress on Zayachy Island was founded by Russian tsar Peter the Great.
1712 - According to the will of Peter the Great, the capital of Russia was moved from Moscow to Saint Petersburg.
1764 - The foundation of the Hermitage as a palace museum.
1818 - Construction of St. Isaac Cathedral, the largest domical cathedral in Russia and the 4th largest cathedral in the world
1825, December - uprising of the Decembrists on Senate Square.
1837 - Alexander Pushkin, the greatest Russian poet, died in a duel. His life and creative work were in close connection with Saint Petersburg.
1837 - The opening of the first Russian railroad Saint Petersburg Tsarskoe Selo.
1850 - The opening of the first permanent bridge across the Neva River. Beforehand only temporary bridges crossed the river.
1881, March 1 - Assassination of Russian Emperor Alexander II the Emancipator. On the place of his assassination is situated the Church of Our Savior on the Spilled Blood.
1905, January 9 - Bloody Sunday . On this day Russian tsar Nicolas II ordered to shoot the peaceful demonstration of the people who came to ask for better life conditions.
1914 - Saint Petersburg was renamed Petrograd.
1917, October 25 (November 7, new style) - The October Socialist Revolution began. The Provisional Government was arrested in the Winter Palace, and the Bolshevik Party headed by Vladimir Lenin got the power.
1924 - The city was renamed Leningrad in honor of Vladimir Lenin.
1941, September 9 - The beginning of the siege of Leningrad. The siege lasted about 900 days and these were the most tragic days in the history of the city.
1944, January 27 - The siege of Leningrad was totally broken, but over 500 000 citizens died during the blockade.
1991 - The citizens of the city voted for returning the original name Saint Petersburg to the city.
2003, May 27 - Saint Petersburg celebrated its 300th anniversary.
