In Saint Petersburg, that is often called a cultural capital of Russia, there are just under 200 museums. The State Hermitage, the treasure-house of the world art, and the State Russian Museum, treasuring masterpieces of Russian art, are world-famous and don't need any special introduction, but there are a lot of other museums not so grand but very interesting and really worth visiting.
Russian State Museum of Arctic and Antarctic
The silent white continent has always been attracting scientists and explorers. For a long time Russia and then the Soviet Union held the lead in the opening up and exploration of Polar Regions. In the Soviet period a special museum that was to cover this field of knowledge broadly was established in Leningrad.

Botanical Garden
In 1714 Peter the Great ordered to lay out on the bank of the Karpovka River the Aptekarsky ogorod (pharmaceutical garden) - a nursery "for the growing of useful, curious and foreign plants". By the middle of the 18th century about 300 plant species had been already cultivated in the Aptekarsky ogorod.

Literary-memorial museum of Anna Akhmatova
In the Fontanny Dom (Fountain House) Anna Akhmatova, an outstanding Russian poet of the 20th century, has lived for 30 years. In this very house she got threw the terrible post-revolutionary years, arrests of her son and husband, the years of Stalin terror and wrote her mot famous poems.

State Hermitage
The State Hermitage is one of the largest museums in the world. To see all the exhibits treasured in the Hermitage is just impossible. Scientists had religiously calculated that if you watch each item nor longer than a minute and spend daily in the Hermitage 8 hours, it will take you almost 15 years to view all the museum's exhibits.

Menshikov Palace

House of Peter I
The first building of Saint Petersburg, the wooden house of Peter I was erected, as legend goes, in three days (24 - 26 May) by the soldiers of Semenovsky regiment. In the 18th century another legends was quite popular, according to which Peter I, who enjoyed working as a carpenter, constructed himself his first house in Saint Petersburg.

Yusupov Palace

Central Naval Museum
The Central Naval Museum is one of the oldest museums in Russia and one of the largest of its kind in the world. It originates from the Model Chamber, founded by Peter the Great in 1709. Initially it was a drawing workshop where all the ship models and drawings were kept. In 1805 on its basis the Naval Museum was established.

Kunstkammera
The oldest state museum in Russia was established at Peter the Great's decree in 1704. Many associate the Kunstkammer with the anatomic collection of abnormalities, that is not quite true, while the biggest part of the museum collection is devoted to culture and life of different peoples of the Old and New World.

State Russian Museum
The State Russian Museum treasures the world's largest collection of Russian art. Manege
Nowadays with the exhibition space of 465 square meters, it is the largest exhibition hall in Saint Petersburg. The Manege regularly houses all kinds of noncommercial exhibitions, art seminars, concerts of classical and modern music, music show and presentation.

Leningradsky Zoological Garden
One of the oldest zoological gardens in Russia, the Leningradsky Zoo was founded by two animal-lovers, Sophia and Julius Hebhardt in 1865. The emblem of the Zoo is Polar bear while these rare arctic animals have got acclimatized in Saint Petersburg perfectly well and have been breeding here regularly since 1932.

Pushkin Memorial Museum
The museum, located in the apartment, where Pushkin family lived from autumn of 1936 till winter 1937, holds the great collection of poet's personal belongings, books and objects of art, connected with the life and creativity of the outstanding Russian poet, A.S. Pushkin.

Zoological Museum
The museum exposition familiarizes the visitors with the representatives of the fauna of different regions of the Earth. More than 40 thousand items represent all the groups of animal world - invertebrate, fish, amphibious, reptiles, birds, and mammals. One of the most famous exhibits of the museum collection is the Berezovian mammoth.

Cruiser Aurora
The legendary cruiser Aurora was placed at the eternal berthing on 17 November 1948 and since than has been an inseparable element of the cityscape. Ship number 1 of the Russian Navy, an active participant of three wars and Russian Revolution of 1917, has witnessed many events of the controversial 20th century history.
